After the war many soldiers were out of jobs and blamed the African-American population. A total of 25 riots broke out across the nation in the summer of 1919 ranging from Texas, Illinois, and even Washington D.C.

The worst of them was the Chicago riot which lasted for two weeks until the government was forced to send in the National Guard. 23 blacks and 15 whites were killed and over 500 injured. The race riots did have one good effect. Soon after they ended the NCAAP surged in membership helping them in the war on race.
